Straight Images (updated) - Colour

This is my edited photo of the original below, I have made the wall more orange using colour balance. I did this so that the colours compliment each other more. Doing this made the picture appear warmer as the blue looks darker. I liked the original photograph because I think it was framed well, however with the blue being darker and the wall looking more orange I think it is a lot better. This is one of my favourite photographs that I took today and I used f/5, iso 400 and shutter speed 1/25 to capture the original. 

This is the edit of the photograph below, I love this photograph because I think that the depth of field looks really good. I also like how the contrast looks because I made the sign a richer yellow and the background slightly darker, however I personally think that the original might be better because the photo overall looks darker now that I have edited it.

This edit is a lot better than the original in my opinion because the red looks more red rather than slightly purply like in the original. To do this I used colour balance and I made the red stand out more, I also did this for the green because it was quite a muted green previously. To do this on Colour Balance, I brought the yellow/blue bar down -12 so that there was less blue, this made the postbox more red, I then pulled the green bar up +15 to make the green a lot richer.

This photo is of a red plant next to a green one, I think that the contrast looks really good now that it's been edited, I used colour balance and made the red bar higher, I also used curves to make the photo darker in places, I think that this makes the photo look a lot better as it may have been over-saturated originally.

This is the edited photograph, to make this I had to rotate the photograph because it wasn't straight, however, I don't mind the original as I think it was just the angle, I could've left it without rotating and had just a good photo. I also used colour balance to make this, I wanted the photo to look cold so I brought the red/cyan bar down -15 so that the photo was more blue. I additionally used hue/saturation to make the colours more muted as you can see from the colour of the grass in the original compared to the edited one. Then I used curves to make parts of the photograph darker. I think that overall, this photo is one of my best from todays shoot, however it isn't a great example of colour.

Colour manipulation

I liked the colours on this photograph, I think that they looked good originally but the background was a bit odd in relation as it was quite a dull colour. I think the colours look more striking with a black and white background

I really like the original colour of the sky as the blue gets lighter and it's very clear with no clouds. However I think that it looks nice when it's all based around one colour, it makes it look like it was taken with a sepia sort of filter, which I really quite like.

Work Diary 

Today I took pictures of colours, I was looking for colours that were contrasted, like purple and yellow (colours that are opposite on the colour wheel), I walked around Harlow town and looked for colours that went together but it was very difficult, orange and green aren't really very commonly found together because they are both very bright and it doesn't always look that good together.

However I didn't get many because I found the task quite challenging, although the world is full of colour I felt like I wasn't finding many colours that went well together, additionally I couldn't work the camera that well as it was a college one that I wasn't familiar with, I found it difficult to focus on things even when using auto-focus which made it very difficult to take good photos.

Progression: Next time I will make sure I know how to use the camera before I go out to take photos. I will also spend some time in the studio room and take some more photos so I can choose what colours I am using. I also think that it was made harder due to the fact that it is autumn so it was darker and less colourful, additionally there are less colours around generally because many of the plants were dead and this meant there was a lot less natural colour.

This is my least favourite photograph because I don't think it is framed very well, I also don't really like the colours, I was looking for green and red and it didn't really look very red, it is quite dull looking.

I like this because I think it is really bright and it stands out quite a lot in contrast to the dull background. This is my favourite colour photograph because of this reason.

This is an example of analogous colours, meaning they are all colours next to each other on the colour wheel, I like this photo because it looks absolutely beautiful, I think the colours look really nice together and they don't clash at all. This inspires me to take more photos of nature, especially flowers

This is an example of muted colour, I love this because it looks vintage and old, the book has been spread out beautifully and it still looks natural, this makes me want to take photos of objects I'd find at home because I think it looks really good.

This photograph is an example of saturation, meaning it has been made to look brighter than it actually is. This looks really good on pictures outside, especially in the summer, as some photos outside can look quite dreary when you don't want it too so saturation is a good tool to use.

This is an example of complimentary colours, meaning the two colours are opposite on the colour wheel, I think this looks good because the colours are so blocky, there's no clouds in the sky in this photo.

Complimentary colours: complimentary colours are colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel, for example purple and yellow or red and green.

This is a colour wheel, we can use this in photography to see what colours go together, opposite colours on the wheel are complimentary so an example wold be blue and orange or red and green. Although these colours do compliment each other, it can sometimes look bad so I need to be wary of that when I go and take photographs
