Work Diary - Lines

Today I took pictures of lines on and off College campus, I really enjoyed this task as it was challenging to find different types of lines, vertical and horizontal were most common and this meant that I had to look in places I'd never been in Harlow to find other ones. I really like the picture I took of converging lines and the one of the golden coloured brick wall.

I didn't take any photos in the studio today because it was quite easy to find photographs outside of controlled environments. I would've liked to take some pictures inside the studio however I like the photos I took outside enough to not need to take any photos inside.

The weather today was good which improved the photos immensely, if it had been rainy or cloudy the pictures would've been darker and gloomier and although this doesn't really matter when relating to lines I still prefer it like that, it makes the experience much more enjoyable.

Progression: Next time I will take some photos in the studio because I think I could get better photos if I am able to control how the lighting hits the objects. However some of my favourite line photographs I wouldn't be able to take in the studio because they tended to be buildings.

I don't like this photograph because it doesn't look very good, I took it because I wanted some photos of curved lines, but the lines of the mannequin's legs and the blocks they are standing on are very similar colours and I don't think the affect is very nice.

I like this photograph because I think that the colours are nice as well as the lines, I like it because I used the rule of two thirds and it is very even looking. This photograph was taken outside and I really like how light it is especially as I didn't have to use any professional lights. I am very proud of this photo.

Contact Sheet - Colour

This is my contact sheet for Colour, I took a few of pictures of red and green together as they were the most common colour combination i could find.

Definition Post - Colour

Colour

Colour is the aspect of things that is caused by differing qualities of light being reflected or emitted by them

Saturation: the saturation of a photograph tells us how intense the colours are, a saturated image has overly bright colours.

Muted colour: muted colours are colours that are less intense; they have usually had black, white, or a complimentary colour added to them to make them like this.

Analogous colours: analogous colours are colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, usually one of them is a primary colour, for example red, red-violet, and red-orange.

Complimentary colours: complimentary colours are colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel, for example purple and yellow or red and green.

This is a colour wheel, we can use this in photography to see what colours go together, opposite colours on the wheel are complimentary so an example wold be blue and orange or red and green. Although these colours do compliment each other, it can sometimes look bad so I need to be wary of that when I go and take photographs

Contact Sheets - Lines

These are my 24 best photographs from when we looked at lines, my favourite one is of the no entry sign, it shows horizontal lines, vertical lines, and curved lines, however I don't think it shows tranquility or peace, I think it shows strength more.

This is an example of converging lines in photography, they drag the eye down the line like an arrow. I like this because it's a bit messy still which makes it seem more natural. This inspires me to go out and look for pictures rather than taking photos in the studio.

This is an example of diagonal lines, these lines definitely drag the eye and I especially like this photo because its quite empty but the lines drag you to the people at the top. This inspires me because I don't usually like photos of the road and they don't usually look good but this photograph looks great.

This is an example of straight lines, I like this because its quite simple but I don't like that the white looks so faded. This inspires me because it shows me that even a simple photograph can look good.

This is an example of curved lines, I like this photograph because it's so simple, the colours contrast a lot which looks beautiful. It shows curved lines a few times, on the outside of the body and round the hole is a curved line.

This is an example of vertical lines, I like this photograph because its very repetitive but looks great, although the lines aren't perfect and some of them are slightly slanted, I still think they look great.

Define - Lines

Lines

Lines are a formal element, along with shape, colour, tone, depth, texture and form. Each type of line has a symbolic meaning that can trigger a different emotion in our brains. A line represents a 'path' between two points.

Horizontal lines imply tranquility, peace and harmony, an example of this would be the horizon, the horizon can be a very peaceful image as it shows the day coming to a close.

Vertical lines imply power and strength, for example a tall sturdy oak tree, a tree shows power because they survive for so long and they are much taller than humans.

Curved lines imply quiet, calm, or sensual feelings, an example of a curved line would be a river, rivers are quite calming to watch because they curve round smoothly.

Converging lines imply depth, scale and distance, there are many examples of this as it is usually just the angle you take the photo in, my example is of a tube station.

Diagonal lines show change and movement as they drag the eye in that direction, an example of this is the side of a mountain.
